ESSO, or better known as Exxon Mobil, in 1965 drilled Australia’s first offshore well and discovered the Barracouta gas field in the Bass Strait. Two years later Kingfish was discovered, the first offshore oil field, which to this day remains the largest oil reserve ever discovered in Australia. There are 23 offshore platforms and installations in total, which have produced to date approximately four billion barrels of crude oil, and eight trillion cubic feet of gas.
